Is It Legal?
If you rent, or have a nosy neighbor, don't be surprised if someone involves the local police force. Almost every state permits amateur brewing. Even in the few forbidden states you find homebrew shops and clubs.
Federal law was changed in 1979 to return to pre-Prohibition traditions. Unless prohibited locally, each brewer can produce 100 gallons per year or 200 where there are other adults in the household. Relevant information about your state's laws can be found online at the Homebrewers Association website.
Of course, that doesn't mean you won't find someone convinced that you're cooking up methamphetamine or moonshine! Be polite, and explain what you're doing and why that big copper coil isn't actually part of a still. Your neighbors are probably just curious and want to try your beer!
The government doesn't go after the run-of-the-mill homebrewing scofflaw, but selling your beer will get their attention quickly! The law strictly forbids homebrewers from selling. Distillation of alcohol is another no-no.
