Vaishyas: The Commoners

The Vaishyas of the caste system were typically merchants or agriculturalists. They were also known as the providers. Because this class was comprised of farmers and merchants, it was known as the backbone of the economy. To further understand their importance in the economy, we could employ a modern term: the middle class.
