The caste system has been an institution of Hinduism from the beginning. From the earliest Aryan times, there has been evidence of a stratification of Indian society, with the priestly class at the top of the social order. Although the caste system was officially outlawed after Indian independence from Great Britain in 1947, it had a profound impact on the formation of Indian society, and its legacy is apparent in today's India.
