Rhythm is the pulse and the heartbeat of music. From the beginning of recorded history man has been playing drums and other percussion instruments. In ancient tribal dances the drums were what connected all the dancers together in a common rhythm. Drums perform the same function today in a modern rock, jazz, or blues band — all of the players sync up with the drummer and, by doing so, all of the players lock together into a common groove.
