Toots Thielemans
Toots Thielemans is the unrivalled master of jazz chromatic harmonica. Many people have mistaken his harmonica tracks for a brilliant jazz saxophonist with unlimited technique, because the complexity and dexterity he brings to the chromatic harmonica were unheard of before his time.
Thielemans was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1922. Influenced by guitarist Django Rhinehart and saxophonist Charlie Parker, he developed a head for jazz that he applied to the harmonica. In 1950 he had the opportunity to join the legendary bandleader Benny Goodman on a European tour. In 1952 he came to the United States to live permanently. His first American gig was playing in Charlie Parker's band, and from there he went on to play with pianist George Shearing.
Over the years Thielemans has recorded and performed with the top names in jazz, including Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Jaco Pastorius. He has also been active on the Brazilian music scene, playing with Milton Nasciemento, Gilberto Gil, and Luis Bonfa. Thielemans continues to record and perform to this day.
The next chapter will look at the stars of rock and roll who helped establish the harmonica as the popular instrument it is today.
