Bringing Technique, Amplification, and Effects Together
Let's listen to some effects on different styles of music. The music is specific to the effect being used. When you decide on the effect you want to purchase, try these examples. You'll be very pleased!
Delayed Eighth Notes
The delayed eighth note is a lot of fun to play with. Commonly used by guitarist The Edge of U2, this effect is simple to set. First you get a delay unit and set the feedback (how many repeats you want) on “1.” FIGURE 15-2 shows a C scale to a D minor sounding scale played as eighth notes. The result of using an eighth note delay is seen below with the notes in parenthesis. On Track 62, you can hear the click (set at 90bpm) and how it should be counted. Give it a try — you'll be playing for hours.
Wah-Wah Style
This is simply fun. Using a wah-wah pedal (popularized by Jimi Hen-drix), play the example shown in FIGURE 15-3 and demonstrated in Track 63. The fun comes in when you play the first chord, then you mute the remaining chords while moving the wah-wah pedal up and down. You'll notice your mouth moving along as well. No worries, it's not habit-forming.
