Guitar design is always evolving. But it is far behind in design evolution compared to the advancements of electronic synthesizers and electronics in general. Guitars are designed ergonomically first, then secondly for sonic beauty. The use of different woods and building methods plays a part in the ongoing design of the guitar. In the past few decades, there has been a movement to find alternative building materials to protect natural resources. Materials such as aluminum, plastic, and graphite composites have been used to build excellent sounding instruments.
