Beginning Exercises

FIGURE 4-18 shows a left-hand fingering exercise. Notice that you should play this using each finger to a fret as shown. (Normally, you would not play the B on the fourth fret of the third string or on the open second string. But for the purposes of this exercise go ahead and do it anyway.)

FIGURE 4-19 shows an exercise enabling you to practice the “finger per fret” rule. Do this exercise in conjunction with Track 5 of this book's CD.

Left-and Right-Hand Finger-Dexterity Exercise

The exercise shown in FIGURE 4-20 combines left-and right-hand coordination skills as well as an introduction to finger dexterity. The idea here is to practice slowly. Listen to the example as it is played on Track 6 of this book's CD. At one point, you will have to use the pinky finger of your left hand. The pinky is a little weaker than the other fingers, so using it will take a little getting used to. Remember, the numbers next to the notes are the fingers to be used on the left hand.
