Learning Songs with a Friend

Depending where you are in life, the genre of songs you learn will differ. Some will enjoy learning those classic songs from the 1960s, while others will enjoy classic 1970s rock music. But before you get started on your new career as the guitarist in a highly sought-after cover band, you and a buddy should get started on some simple duets. They are fun, melodic, and you can begin giving concerts immediately.

Playing Duets

The first tune you will start with is “Old Joe Clark,” shown in FIGURE 19-4 and demonstrated on Track 68 of this book's CD. This is a traditional bluegrass tune. Since bluegrass music is played fast, my advice is to get the tune down first, then gradually speed up. On the repeats, you and the other guitarist should switch parts. Start making beautiful music together! You would normally play acoustic guitar on these songs, but if you feel the need to rock out, then please, by all means do so.

Get that bluegrass feeling in your head because here comes another one. FIGURE 19-5 shows “Mississippi Sawyer,” a tune you'll hear demonstrated on Track 69 of this book's CD.

Now for some simple patriotism. FIGURE 19-6 shows “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” which you can hear demonstrated on Track 70.
