Crop Formations and the Mayan Calendar

Researcher Stray has done some remarkable work correlating the geometries of different crop formations with the underlying number harmonics of the Mayan calendar system. These correlations are so extensive that numbers related to nearly all of the known cycles that were being tracked by the Maya have been represented in a type of crop formation. Here are some notable examples of the correspondences:

  • 13 — Tones: A thirteen-fold star appeared at Huish, Wiltshire in July 2003. This formation is almost identical to a diagram created by Argüellés in The Mayan Factor to illustrate the thirteen-baktun cycle.

  • 20 — Solar seals: A Mayan design of a circle with twenty “G” symbols, the Mayan sign for the Milky Way, with thirteen sectors inside the circle, appeared in Waylands Smithy in 2004.

  • 33 — Symbols in the Tzolkin: A sun formation with thirty-three divisions in its outer circle appeared in Silbury Hill, Avebury, Wiltshire, in May 1998.

  • 52 — Calendar round: A formation with fifty-two circles in the tail appeared in Beckhampton, Wiltshire, in 1998. According to the crop circle researcher known as Red Collie, the alien face formation at Crabwood in 2002 contains the fraction of 104/2. This is a key number of the Mayan calendar system expressing the relationship between the calendar round and the Venus round.

  • 65 — Venus round: A pentagram with thirteen scales between each pair of arms, making a total of sixty-five scales, appeared in Silbury Hill, Wiltshire, in 2002. The pentagram is the figure traced out by Venus over five of its 584-day cycles, which adds up to exactly eight 365-day Haabs. Sixty-five Venus cycles equal one Venus round, which is exactly the same length of time as two calendar rounds.

  • 260 — The Tzolkin: A grid of 780 squares appeared in Etchilhampton, Wiltshire, in August 1997. Three Tzolkins of 260 days each equals 780 days. This is also equivalent to one synodic period of Mars. Crop circle researcher Michael Glickman noted that this formation appeared exactly 780 weeks before the same week in August 2012. Of this he said, “I am convinced that what is being predicted is a dimensional shift . . . which culminates in 2012. By that point, we will fully occupy an entirely different level of being.”

  • 360 — The Tun/Haab: A formation with twenty outer circles and eighteen inner squiggles appeared in Avebury Trusloe, Wiltshire, in 1999. These numbers represent the eighteen uinals of twenty days each in the yearly Haab calendar.

  • 400 — The baktun: A grid of 400 squares appeared in East Kennett, Wiltshire, in 2000. There are 400 360-day tuns in one baktun.

  • Mayan and Aztec Designs in Crop Circles

Another distinct evolution happened in the complexity of crop formations when Mayan-and Aztec-style designs began to appear around 2001. These incorporate some of the classic motifs of Mayan and Aztec art, like the Mayan “G” shape, which is commonly found on Mayan ceramics and statues. The first of these appeared in Wakerley Woods, Northamptonshire, in 2001 and was named the Aztec Pizza, because it looked like a cross between the famous Aztec sunstone and a pizza. It incorporates eighteen “G” glyphs into its design, which is the Mayan symbol for the Milky Way. Stray has pointed out that eighteen is also a key number in the Aztec sunstone.

    The Mayan Wheel

The evolution of these designs continued to progress over the next few years, reaching a new high point in 2004 with the Mayan Wheel formation that was found at the ancient megalithic site of Silbury Hill, Wiltshire, in August 2004. This formation was considered by many to be the finest of that summer and was widely reported in the world's media, where it was named the doomsday crop circle. This was because it seemed to evoke a deep resonance with the 2012 end date of the Mayan calendar, although no detailed analysis or interpretation (other than mentioning the formation's Mayan appearance) was offered in the coverage.

The crop formation with the largest area and the most circles was found at Milk Hill, near Alton Barnes in Wiltshire in August 2001. It consisted of a six-armed Julia-set fractal with thirteen major circles in each arm. The total number of circles in the formation was 409 and it measured more than 800 feet in diameter.

The formation does seem to contain a number of symbols that are related to 2012. Firstly, around the edge are double-G glyphs, called jaguar snouts by the Maya, a symbol that represented the entrance to the underworld. This is found at the dark rift at the center of the galaxy, from which the winter solstice sunrise will appear to emerge on December 21.

Some interpreters have suggested that the formation also represents the four completed worlds in the Mayan creation story and the current fifth one. The previous worlds are represented by the outer rings, which are divided into four equal parts by a broad dark space in between. The open circle at its center, surrounded by two wings, represents our current fifth sun.

    The Secklendorf Formation

Most crop formations are still found in the west of England, and the majority of those are concentrated in the crop circle country of Wiltshire, within a 15-mile radius of Avebury stone circle. However, increasingly more complex crop formations are being found on mainland Europe and elsewhere, such as Canada. In 2008, a particularly impressive example was found at Secklendorf in Germany. The formation has a star tetrahedron in the central circle and a complex ring of orbits and planet circles surrounding it. This has been interpreted by Collie as showing near-future orbital locations for Earth, Venus, and Mars on the forthcoming Venus transit of June 6, 2012. It also shows the orbital locations for Earth and Venus on the calendar end date of December 21, 2012.

The Secklendorf formation seems to contain a map of multiple alignments of Venus in the approach to 2012. Each of these six dates is a significant conjunction:

  • January 11, 2012, superior conjunction of Venus with the sun

  • June 6, 2012, inferior conjunction of Venus with the sun, Venus transit (represented by the star tetrahedron at the center of the formation, with the position of Mars also shown by the smallest circle on the outer ring)

  • December 21, 2012, three months before superior conjunction of Venus with the sun (end of the fifth sun/thirteen baktuns)
