This chapter introduces some of the different cycles of the Mayan calendar system and explains what makes it so special. In order to understand the calendar's beauty and power, it is necessary to begin by looking at how the Maya count so that we can understand the basis of their mathematics and appreciate its differences from the decimal system. This then reveals a quite remarkably elegant way of counting that is very much in tune with the cycles of nature.
