The Change from a Geocentric to Heliocentric Worldview

In the last chapter, the evidence for a possible binary companion to the sun was presented. In this chapter, this idea is expanded upon to include the possibility that this yet undiscovered star may be responsible for producing the effect of the precession of the equinoxes. This would link the star to the mechanism responsible for the galactic alignment of the 2012 era, when the winter solstice sun can be seen to rise in conjunction with the center of the galaxy. Redefining precession as a heliocentric phenomenon based on the motion of the sun around another star would also revolutionize the science of astronomy in a shift equal to that caused by the theories of Copernicus.

Copernicus's explanation of the cycle of precession was part of a revolutionary new model of our solar system that moved the center of the known universe from Earth to the sun. The irony of this is that the motions described by Copernicus to create the modern heliocentric or sun-centered model of the solar system are all actually geocentric or Earth centered.

COPERNICAN MOTIONS OF EARTH

  • The first motion of Earth proposed by Copernicus was the rotation of the planet on its axis to produce the twenty-four hour day.

  • The second motion was the orbit of Earth around the sun that created the 365-day year.

  • The third motion was the wobble of Earth on its axis to produce the effect of the precession of the equinoxes. A century after Copernicus introduced his theory Sir Isaac Newton suggested that this was an effect caused by the combined gravity of the sun and the moon.

  • In Copernicus's model, the sun doesn't move. However, we now know that the sun orbits the galactic center and oscillates up and down in relation to the plane of the galactic equator. The binary star theory introduces heliocentric motion, the idea that the solar system is moving in a curve through space in relation to its companion. This, it suggests, is the cause of precession, not Earth wobbling.
