The Mathemagic of the Calendar

The magic of the mathematics that transfixes both Shearer and Argüel-lés demonstrates many interesting properties, but the evidence that any of these were actually utilized by the Maya themselves is pretty slim. Mayanists give no credence to the idea of galactic activation portals, and the idea that there were links between the Tzolkin calendar and I Ching is speculative. However, they are both ways of qualitatively describing time. They both tell us what kind of subjective feeling a moment in time should have. This is a quality that is missing in our modern idea of time, where time is treated solely as a quantity. Argüellés's claims are far reaching and visionary, but the elegance of the mathematical harmony that he demonstrates should not be confused with evidence that these ideas are provable.
