In Greek, “crawling things” are known as herps. Thus, herpetology is the study of the creeping crawlies known as amphibians and reptiles. While these two classes of critters are generally studied at the same time, they are actually very different. It's just that naturalists ages ago thought they were more similar and the practice has persisted. Whether you choose to study them together or give them their separate stages, it's time to give a big hoorah for herps because they are disappearing quickly and they need your help.
