In Greek, “crawling things” are known as herps. Thus, herpetology is the study of the creeping crawlies known as amphibians and reptiles. While these two classes of critters are generally studied at the same time, they are actually very different. It's just that naturalists ages ago thought they were more similar and the practice has persisted.
