Getting the Rest You Both Need
When a new baby is born, family and friends all rush to be first in line to meet her and congratulate the new parents. And while it is wonderful to visit with loved ones and share your new baby with the world, you might want to limit the number or length of visits for at least the first few days.
The best way to care for yourself and your new little baby is to ensure that you both get all of the rest you need during your first few days together. That may mean limiting phone calls and visitors initially. It may also mean putting off other tasks (like housework and laundry) until you are able to rest. For the first few days, all you should worry about is eating, sleeping, and caring for your new baby.
In order to achieve the rest you need when the baby is born, it is a good idea to have everything as organized as possible before you go into labor. Set up a schedule with your friends and family so that they can come and help with the household duties and cooking. Make a list of chores that need attention, such as feeding pets, dishes, and grocery shopping and do not be afraid to ask people to help (or take them up on their offers to help) whenever you can.
You will probably hear the same advice time and time again: Sleep when your baby sleeps. Take this advice to heart and take it one step further by also resting while your baby is nursing. If possible, lay down to nurse your baby for the first few days so that you can bond and snuggle while catching a few zzzs.
