What's Your Beef?

The production of beef makes more of an impact on the environment than any other type of food. According to a report produced by the World Wildlife Fund, more pasture is used for cattle than all other domesticated animals and crops combined. Cattle also eat an increasing proportion of grain produced from agriculture, are one of the most significant contributors to water pollution, and are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.

The average American eats roughly four servings of beef each week. Skip the beef in just one meal each week and you can dramatically reduce your overall impact on the environment.

A vegetarian or vegan diet can be a great option for pregnant women, as long as you pay close attention to the amount of vitamins, calcium, and protein your diet provides. Talk to your health care provider about the food selections and vitamin supplements that would work best for you.
