Toxins in the Workplace
The levels and types of toxins that you are exposed to at work will vary depending upon the type of work that you do. In the typical office setting, exposure is likely to be similar to what you would find in your home (chemical compounds from cleaning agents, dust, furniture, etc.). In general, you should make an effort to avoid exposure to harmful fumes from glues, paints, household cleaners, new carpets, dry-cleaned clothing, gasoline, pesticides, incinerators, smog, cigarette smoke, and flame retardants. If you work in an industrial environment or in any type of job that requires frequent exposure to chemicals, talk with your employer and your health care provider about the potential hazards you may be encountering during your pregnancy and the best ways to minimize them.
