Table Settings

Use reusable dishes, utensils, and cloth napkins, if possible, to eliminate the waste created by disposable table settings. If you do need to use disposable products, seek out those with the highest recycled paper content or look for compostable products that will break down quickly in a compost pile.

Whole Foods stores (www.wholefoods.com) carry durable plates and bowls that look like sturdy paper ones but are actually made from renewable and biodegradable sugar cane. Another option, try the plates and bowls from Recycline (www.recycline.com) that are made entirely of recycled plastic yogurt cups and are sturdy enough to be reused several times.

Save space and money by renting or borrowing items that you will only need occasionally, such as large punch bowls, pitchers, chaffing dishes, or insulated beverage containers. Hit your local thrift store to pick up extra dishes, bowls, and serving utensils that will add to the eclectic flair of your party.

For utensils, look for Cereplast (www.cereplast.com) forks, spoons, and knives, which are made from a biodegradable bioplastic consisting of 80 percent corn-based starch and 20 percent green fillers. You can throw them straight in to the compost pile after the party and they'll break down in about three months.
