In-Kind Support
In-kind support refers to those things that the organization and its partners, if any, are offering in addition to or in lieu of money. In-kind support includes such contributions as the following:
Staff time: This is necessary when staff participate in such things as collaborative planning with others and are not paid additional wages for that participation.
Space and utilities: If an organization is providing office space for a staff person, rent, and utilities for the space usually qualifies as an in-kind donation. This amount is usually available from the organization's accountant, who has computed the cost of square footage and operational overhead (electricity, gas, etc.) to determine the value of a space donation. Telephone expenses may also be included in the cost per square foot.
Volunteer hours: Volunteer hours can be computed based on the average amount you would pay for comparable services in your community times the number of hours you can guarantee will be allocated to this project.
Products: Existing products (such as desks and computer equipment) that merely have to be moved to an office for a new staff person count as in-kind donations. New-product donations (for instance, software donated to a nonprofit organization) can be added as “cash match” if you document the value of the donation. Purchasing new equipment such as computers, furnishings, or telephones to support a staff position may be requested of grant funds or purchased by the applicant and offered as match.
