Phone and Fax

The telephone and fax machine are underused. With the increased popularity of e-mail, fewer people use phone and fax as follow-up tools. You are encouraged to use the phone whenever possible and, in order to place an actual document within someone's hands, the fax as well. While at first awkward for most, you phone skills and confidence will grow with each call. Do call to confirm receipt of documents, to identify next steps, and to make a clear “can I schedule an interview” request. Leave brief, slow, and clear voice-mail messages whenever you call. Don't appear to be a pest, but do be persistent and professional.

After you have left a message or two, fax or e-mail a note. Alternating communication techniques can be effective. Always briefly and clearly state who you are, when and how your earlier contact was made, and what you would like to happen next. Don't be afraid to state “I would like to meet with you,” or more assertively, “I would appreciate an interview.” Also, ask if they would like another copy of your resume to refresh their memory regarding your background. It is okay to provide one with the first two follow-up letters, particularly those that are faxed.
