Communication, Not Simply Application

If you have ever cracked open a fortune cookie and read “He who hesitates is lost,” you probably understand the overly simplistic yet profound importance of continued communication. So-called “application processes” are, by nature, reactive. They inspire you to be passive. When applying to college, to graduate school, for a mortgage, or for an association membership, waiting is appropriate. When applying for employment, communication is more than desired. It is necessary if you want to succeed.

Resumes are the most common symbols of job-search communication. While they may lead most to assume that you are in job-search mode, you use supporting and continued documentation and follow-up communication to confirm your status and provide you and those you contact much-needed focus. Ironically, the most common mistake made by job seekers is overdependence on resumes. No matter how effective your resume is, it must be continually supported by your assertive and appropriate actions, reactions, and continued interactions.
