Other Enforcers

U.S. marshals and deputy marshals protect federal courts and see that nothing happens to disrupt trials. They also protect federal judges, transport prisoners, protect federal witnesses, and perform other duties related to the judiciary. In addition, marshals arrest and track down fugitives from justice.

The U.S. Department of Diplomatic Security special agents fight the war on terror. They protect American embassies and ambassadors overseas. In the United States, they investigate passport fraud, authorize security clearances, and engage in counterterrorism efforts.

U.S. Secret Service special agents protect the president, the vice president, and their families. They also protect presidential candidates, former presidents, and foreign dignitaries visiting the United States. Secret Service agents also investigate counterfeiting, forgery, and fraudulent use of credit cards.

Immigration inspectors interview people seeking legal entry into the country. Customs inspectors check cargo coming into the country through seaports, airports, and across the borders. They confiscate prohibited items and arrest smugglers, money launderers, and other criminals.

Most of these positions will put you at the GS-10 grade level. GS-10 employees start at a base salary of $42,548. They can advance to the GS-13 grade level in field nonsupervisory assignments at a base salary of $64,478. Grades GS-14 and GS-15 are paid a base salary of about $76,193 and $89,625.
