Biologists
An FDA biologist reviews and evaluates scientific and clinical data to determine the safety and effectiveness of medical products; screens out products that may pose a public health hazard; conducts research on the preparation, preservation, and safety of blood and blood products; and studies the biological effects of various additives found in foods.
Grade (Salary) Levels
The federal General Schedule (GS) grade levels at which biologist positions are commonly filled are GS-9 ($38,175) through 13 ($65,832) at the headquarters level and GS-5 ($25,195) through 11 ($46,189) at the field level. Higher grade levels in both headquarters and field offices are available based on peer review of individual accomplishments or responsibilities.
Qualifications
The basic qualifications required for all grades in this position include a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines, or a combination of education and experience. In order to qualify for higher-graded positions, candidates must have additional amounts of specialized experience or related education. The amount of additional experience or education needed depends on the grade of the position. FDA biologists are located in the administration's headquarters in suburban Washington, D.C., and in FDA facilities throughout the country.
