Department of Motor Vehicles

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is a state-run bureaucracy, so there are fifty of them — one for each state. To find your state's DMV, go online to www.dmv.org. Each state has its own DMV, but the processes and procedures are similar. This section uses the Commonwealth of Virginia to provide an example of a typical DMV. You will find that it is more or less the same as your state's DMV.

As a DMV employee, you will receive the standard perks and benefits that most federal and state jobs offer, including these:

  • Flex-time

  • Alternative hours

  • Competitive pay

  • Twelve paid holidays per year

  • Health care — medical and dental

  • Life insurance

  • Short-term and long-term disability

  • Vacation and sick leave

  • Retirement plan

  • Low-cost (or no-cost) parking

  • Employee recognition programs

  • Work-site wellness opportunities

  • Paid training opportunities

  • The Commonwealth of Virginia's DMV has a customer base of more than 5 million people. Your state will have more or less, but it probably, like Virginia's, offers more face-to-face interaction with the public than any other state agency.

The Commonwealth of Virginia's DMV's mission statement, typical of the other forty-nine, is to “Administer motor vehicle-related laws, advance transportation safety and collect/distribute transportation revenues in a manner that is ethical, security-sensitive and focused on customers and employees.”
