Cleaning and Trimming Ears
Golden Retrievers can be prone to frequent ear infections mainly due to their floppy ears, and lack of air circulation to the ear canal. Many homeopathic veterinarians believe that frequent ear infections are a sign of an overworked immune system and are a symptom of a larger issue. If your Golden has frequent ear infections and doesn't swim or get his ears wet often, consider consulting a qualified homeopathic veterinary professional for advice and evaluation of his overall health.
A Golden Retriever's ears should be cleaned on a weekly basis with an over-the-counter ear cleaner (purchased through your veterinarian or pet supply catalog). Turn the ear inside out, and squirt a small amount of ear-cleaning solution into the canal. Close the ear canal, and massage the base of the ear until you hear it make squishy sounds. Let your dog shake his head a few times to loosen any waxy junk, then use a gauze pad or soft tissue wrapped around your finger to wipe out excess junk. Dry the ear as best you can with a dry gauze pad or tissue.
Ear infections manifest themselves in frequent head shaking, black, waxy-looking junk in the ears, and a bad odor. You should bring your dog to your veterinarian if you notice these symptoms as your dog probably needs to be treated for an ear infection.
