The Clicker Training Method

The use of positive reinforcement, through the use of an event marker like a clicker, is the best method for training dogs. Other methods can and do work, but this method is fun and results come much quicker. All ages and abilities can learn to apply its principles. Becoming a great clicker trainer does not depend on physical strength or asserting your will over your dog.

The clicker is a small plastic box with a metal tab that makes a clicking sound when you push down with your thumb. The sound of the click is paired with a food reward by clicking the clicker and giving the dog a treat. After a few repetitions the dog learns to associate the sound of the clicker with a food reward. The click (and pending food reward) is then used to mark the behavior you are working on, to identify in “language” your dog understands which behavior earned the reward.

You will find that your dog will work for the sound of the click rather than just the presence of a food reward. When the dog begins to understand clicker training, you can use other rewards, such as balls, tug toys, etc. Starting out with food is faster and makes your training more portable than using toys and games.

My dog isn't getting it. What am I doing wrong?

You may want to keep a notebook of your progress so that you can refer to it when you run into trouble. Keeping track of your progress will allow you to see when you've made it too hard to earn the click and how to break things down into simpler steps.

By pairing the clicker with a food reward, we have created a powerful way to specify to the dog (especially a very active breed like Golden Retrievers) exactly which of the behaviors he offers are rewardable. Since dogs are always on the move, clicker training will save you lots of time.

Canine University® has successfully trained more than 2,000 dogs using clicker training. Golden Retrievers are smart and willing partners in the learning process and are only limited by the amount of time you dedicate to the task. You do not need force to train any dog, but especially not a Golden. You will love training your Golden using this method and enjoy watching him really learn how to think and problem-solve. Even after all these years, it still gives us chills to see how dogs come alive when they really understand what you want.
