When the Hunter Becomes the Hunted
Psychics, sensitives, and ghost hunters have existed for hundreds of years in cultures all over the world, so the practices employed to protect them vary according to culture and era. Even some of today's scientific ghost hunters say a prayer of protection before beginning the hunt.
In Journeys Out of the Body, Robert Monroe describes his personal experiences of a psychic assault while astral traveling. He describes “rubbery entities” that kept attacking him and attempting to climb onto his back. Eventually, a man in a monk's robe came out and pulled the creatures away, to Monroe's great relief.
Are these non-physical beings ghosts, demons, spirits, or elementals? What do they gain by attacking or preying on humans and what form do these attacks take? The creatures that prey on living humans are characterized differently, but whether these entities are demons or simply the souls of terribly wicked humans, the net effect is the same. Astral traveling is not for the faint-hearted and should not be attempted by people merely wishing to experiment with the paranormal for fun.
Many paranormal investigators say a simple prayer of protection before starting the night's activities. They ask for protection from anything that might harm them during the hunt and from entities that might become attached to them and decide to follow them home.
People who are interested in the occult must remember at all times that the astral world is filled with all sorts of energies and entities. Just as there are good and bad people, there are good and bad spirits that inhabit the other side. Investigating the occult can be likened to opening a door or leaving your doors and windows open to intruders. Unless you take steps to lock the doors and windows you have opened, you may find yourself playing host to unwanted intruders. This has happened over and over again and is mentioned repeatedly in most literature that deals with the paranormal.
Only very foolish or immature people dabble in the occult without proper preparation and precautions. The classic case is when parents buy a Ouija board for their children to play with, as if it is a game of Monopoly. When problems arise from the opening of a conduit, it sometimes takes a very long time and a lot of effort to shut down that pipeline. Asking for protection and taking proper precautions should be done before any sort of interaction with the spirit realm; this includes reading tarot cards, dowsing, or any sort of divination.
