Upon a first or even a second glance, a quaint farmhouse or a cornfield may seem completely ordinary. Nothing strikes the casual observer as remotely strange. But ghost hunters and psychic investigators who know the history of picturesque antebellum mansions or Civil War battlefields know differently. If ghosts are the spirits of the dead who are emotionally connected to a particular locality, and if the act of passing over was violent or accidental, the chances that the spirit of the departed will linger in some form are much stronger. Obviously, the older the property, the greater the likelihood that ghostly remnants may linger there.
