Sperm Donation

Sperm donation has been around for a long time. It is even socially acceptable enough that it has made its way into many movies and seemingly our everyday life. It is one of the best-known fertility treatments around.

Sperm donation can be used for a variety of issues. You might choose to use donor sperm if your husband or partner has problems with sperm production or mobility. This can also be useful if your partner does not have testicles, or his testicles do not function properly. Many women may even choose to use sperm donors because they do not have a male partner.

All sperm donations are tested for potential diseases like hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. Each specimen is sampled, washed, and frozen for future use. You can purchase sperm in batches from the same donor to use multiple times so that your children will be genetically related, if that is important to you.

The selection process is fairly simple, and usually the donor is unknown to the couple or recipient. The donated sperm can be used in simple reproductive technologies such as an intrauterine insemination (IUI) if you do not have any other female factor fertility problems. Or you may use donated sperm in procedures like in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
