Medications for Men

It may surprise you to learn that there are infertility medications for men. In a few instances of male infertility, medications can be beneficial. Only your doctor can determine when or if medication therapy is the right treatment for your husband or partner.

Vitamins

Vitamins are a common treatment in sperm-related issues. For a long time it was standard issue to give vitamin B12injections to men in fertility treatments. It has been found to increase the number of quality sperm in some men. Studies have found that folic acid can also affect the sperm counts of many men. This means that your partner needs to be taking his vitamins as well to ensure proper sperm counts with healthy sperm.

Antibiotics

Sometimes a problem with sperm production may be caused by an infection in your partner's body. It may not even have any outward symptoms. This type of problem is usually treated with antibiotics, which may be given as an oral regimen or by injection. A normal course of antibiotics is about ten days long, though some infections may require longer or stronger treatment. Your doctor or your husband's doctor can help you find what treatment is right for you.

Hormones

If your partner suffers from a pituitary disorder or some other problem that alters his body's production of luteinizing hormone (LH) or the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), he may be prescribed a form of hormone replacement. Usually this is in the form of a supplemental hormone or something to help the body boost the production of the LH and FSH on its own. Examples of these medications are Pergonal, Novarel, Pregnyl, Profasi, and Repronex.

Producing enough testosterone may also be a problem for some men, even with the above therapies. There are also supplements available for this. Testosterone can be taken via deep intramuscular injection, implant, or by the use of a testosterone patch. Testosterone is not an oral medication as it is not broken down correctly if taken orally. Recently replacement testosterone gels have also become available.
