Lysis of Adhesions

Adhesions are bands of tissue that form in places that they should not form. These bands of tissue can cause pain and or disrupt the normal functioning of your reproductive, or other, systems. It can be caused by previous surgery, previous infection, and even radiation therapies.

It is believed that these types of adhesions, particularly in cases in which you experience pelvic pain, cause some cases of unexplained infertility. It is possible to remove some of these adhesions. This is usually done via the most minimally invasive surgery possible. The goal is to return your body to its normal functioning state.

During your surgery, your surgical team may find that your ovaries are not able to move freely due to adhesions. Sometimes it may be that your fallopian tubes are not able to move, potentially causing problems with your fertility; these organs need to move so that the egg and sperm can travel and meet in the correct spot.

The risk of doing this surgery is that there is the potential to cause you more scarring. This may lead to further adhesions. If you need surgery be sure you have discussed your other options or even sought a second opinion.
