Counseling/Therapy

Sometimes the need for support goes beyond what groups and meetings can provide for you. The issues that you find yourself dealing with may become too great to be dealt with in a peer support arena. You may be referred by your medical care provider or fertility specialist or even by yourself to someone who specializes in dealing with mental and emotional issues. While it may be hard to accept that you need this type of care, it is important that you seek help.

This person may be a psychiatrist or psychologist or other mental health professional. It should be someone who has the background and training to help you deal with the emotional issues that are surrounding your fertility. You may already know of someone, or you can look for someone through your health insurance.

Your fertility clinic may already have a therapist or counselor on board to help you if you decide you need his or her services. This person will have specific training and experience related to fertility issues. Do not hesitate to ask for a referral.

Sometimes the mental and emotional issues that come up are not really related to the issues of fertility, but simply life in general. These stresses combined with the stress of dealing with fertility treatments may feel like too much to deal with. Seeking support by way of counseling can give you a one-on-one place to air your feelings without the fear of the information going anywhere else. It is a place to vent without worrying about what anyone else thinks or without worrying about who is listening.

You may even decide that couples counseling would be appropriate for you and your partner. Many couples find that this is a beneficial part of treatment for fertility issues. This is particularly true for dealing with guilt issues in a relationship.

Particularly stressful situations like that of a physical illness or situation like fertility treatments can create strains in any relationship. Treating them accordingly can help prevent the rift from becoming larger. It can also promote healing.
