What to Pack for Yourself
One of the best ways to get ready for the big “D” (for delivery) day is to start packing your bags. Take advantage of this quiet time to pack for both you and your baby — as sensibly as possible. Planning ahead will ensure you have easy access to all of the practical and comfort items you'll want to have on hand at the hospital, including a list of everyone you want to call to announce the wonderful news!
Practical Items
You'll need a robe and a nightgown, unless you like wearing the standard hospital issue. If you're going to breastfeed, choose a gown that opens easily in the front. Next, some warm, nonskid slippers would be nice, though the hospital typically has nonskid socks. Hospital floors can be slippery, and you'll be walking to the nursery at least once during your stay.
You'll also want to pack a good nursing bra, as well as some nursing pads, in case your milk comes in sooner than you expect. If you're not going to breast-feed, bring a bra that's slightly smaller than you would normally wear to help your breasts return to their prepregnant state.
Comfort Items
Nonperishable snacks for your birthing coach are always a great thing to pack. Your baby's father is bound to get hungry, especially during a long labor, and you don't want him having to spend time waiting in line at the hospital cafeteria when he could be rubbing your back instead!
For easy backrubs, pack a tennis ball or back massager. These items will help him provide extra pressure — a godsend if you have back pain. Finally, pack some toiletries, including your toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brush, makeup, deodorant, and a box of large maxi pads with wings, as you'll need them after the birth.
Essential
To make your birthing experience a little bit more comfortable, bring some soft music on a portable CD player (or several CDs that you like, since it might take a while), a picture of a pleasant scene to focus on during labor and a special toy or meaningful item from one of your other children.
Comfortable Clothing
You'll need one outfit to come home in after the delivery; make sure it's loose enough to accommodate your body comfortably, as you will not lose incredible amounts of weight immediately upon delivery. Include a few pairs of maternity panties and several pairs of socks — you'll need them for the delivery and afterward.
