The Breech Baby

A breech baby is simply a baby who is presenting its feet first — instead of its head — toward the birth canal. Today, almost all breech babies are delivered via C-section. What if your baby is in a breech position prior to birth? Is there anything you can do to help the baby to turn?

See a Specialist

Another option is to go to a specialist who can turn the baby through external manipulation and use of ultrasound to check baby's position. However, some doctors insist that a breech baby is in that position because it is most comfortable — that the baby, in fact, knows that it has a cord around its neck and that moving makes it tighter.

They are growing increasingly skeptical about this procedure, since a few infants have been lost because the umbilical cord was wrapped around the neck at the time of inversion — with the specialist completely unaware.

Fact

Some experts suggest that you try getting on your hands and knees, rocking your pelvis while arching your back, to get the baby to move naturally. This does not always work, but it can sure help ease any back pain you might be experiencing.

Try an Alternative Method

Some women have used acupressure or other nontraditional methods to encourage their babies to move into birthing position. Some women have even tried putting a radio between their knees while lying on their backs, hoping the baby might turn its head in the direction of the music! Whichever method you decide to try, do consult your doctor first. Remember, the baby can still turn at the last minute — even during labor!
