Family-Friendly Baby Stuff

There are so many places catering to families, it's easier than ever before to choose a family outing that everyone can enjoy. With conveniences like family restrooms and breastfeeding rooms, many of the hassles of traveling in a pack are minimized. That's why museums and zoos are such great places for everyone in the family; each family member can appreciate things at his or her own level and pace, and there are plenty of places to take a break if anyone gets tired.

Head for the Great Outdoors

Local parks are great, too, particularly if they have hiking and biking trails. Baby can ride snuggly in a bike trailer behind a parent while brother and sister master training wheels, roller blades, or their scooter.

Many parks offer free concerts in the summer; that's a great time to spread out a blanket and let baby look up in the trees while listening to music or take a nap while siblings dance and play in the playground. There is also the added advantage of being outside with other families, where no one expects children (or adults) to sit quietly. In settings like these, it's much easier to relax and not worry about noise levels.

Essential

Don't forget to pack sunscreen (at your pediatrician's recommendation)or a hat in summer and winter for baby, as well as all the weather gear appropriate for the season whenever you go out. A bit of planning can make the day so much smoother for you and baby.

The Great Big Indoors

The shopping mall beckons again in bad weather, offering rental car-and train-shaped strollers. Some malls even have miniature golf and merry-go-rounds for older kids. Most cities and towns have indoor “play places” geared at the toddler set: a large, open space similar to a great kindergarten classroom, complete with dress-up, tricycles, games, and even play structures. Kids can play safely without you having to watch every move like a hawk, so you, your partner, and baby can enjoy watching the fun.

Seasonally, art, church, and music festivals abound in the summer, and if you live near a lake or beach, you've got a built-in destination for fun in the sun.

Just Have Fun!

Whether it's at the store, in a special class, or with family or friends, you should relax, have fun, and enjoy your time together with baby. After all, you're making memories together that baby will enjoy hearing about much later on. Enjoy your many explorations of the world, and realize that what's fun for you is often just as fun for baby. If you aren't having fun, neither is baby, but try to laugh it off and do something else another time. When it comes to baby's first social escapades, sometimes false starts and disastrous playdates make the best stories!
