Do Your Own Background Check

If you are not working with a child-care provider network or agency and want to do a background check of local candidates, you can easily use online services to do so. Start with a strong search engine such as Google, or visit your local sheriff's Web site to see their sexual offender listing, which (in most cases) can be searched by zip code.

You may also try using some commercial software or Web services such as Net Detective, Web Detective, KnowX.com, or LocatePeople.org. To respect privacy laws, it's generally a good idea to get permission in writing from the person you are investigating. Most standard job application forms (available at your local office supply store) now include a check box for the applicant to grant permission for a criminal background check only.
