Swaddling

Some infants are happiest when they're swaddled; some hate the confinement. Why not experiment and see if your baby enjoys being wrapped in a receiving blanket? Having recently emerged from the confining atmosphere of the womb, some babies feel more secure when they're wrapped from the shoulders down in a light blanket.

How to swaddle your baby:

  1. Lay a blanket on Baby's crib or another flat surface and fold down the top right corner about six inches.

  2. Place Baby on her back with her head on top of the fold.

  3. Pull the corner near Baby's left hand across her body.

  4. Tuck that corner under Baby's back on the right side, under her arm.

  5. Pull the bottom corner up till it is under Baby's chin.

  6. Bring the loose corner over Baby's right arm and tuck it under the back on her side.

  7. Alternatively, if your baby likes having her arms free, swaddle her under the arms so that she has access to her hands and fingers.

Special swaddling blankets are available. If you do swaddle your baby, take care that no part of her face is covered. Once your baby is beginning to move about, you should stop swaddling her, since she can become entangled in the blanket.

Also, never swaddle your baby if the room she sleeps in is warm. SIDS has been associated with overheating, so either lower the temperature in the room or don't swaddle her.
