Rules for Haben or Sein

Make sure that you conjugate every reflexive verb, modal auxiliary verb, and transitive verb with haben.

Intransitive verbs, namely, verbs that do not take an accusative object, use the auxiliary sein instead of haben. Often these are verbs of motion, such as gehen/ist gegangen, meaning “to go” and laufen/ist gelaufen, meaning “to run.” The following exercise focuses on “haben” and weak or strong verbs.

Exercise 20

TRACK 22

Listen to and translate the following German sentences.

  • Sie hat eine Radtour gemacht.

    ___________

  • Er hat den Roman gelesen.

    ___________

  • Er hatte den Artikel gelesen.

    ___________

  • Er wird die Nachricht gelesen haben.

    ___________

  • Sie hat das Essen probieren können.

    ___________

  • Sie hatte sich gesetzt.

    ___________

  • Er hatte sich gekämmt.

    ___________

  • Er hat ihr geantwortet.

    ___________

  • Sie hat seiner Tochter geholfen.

    ___________

  • Sie hatten den ganzen Tag gut gespielt.

    ___________

Exercise 21

Verbs conjugated with sein in the compound past tenses are intransitive verbs that manifest a modification from one place or condition to a different one, show motion toward, or indicate a change of status. Ich bin nach Deutschland geflogen (“I flew to Germany”) is an example of this rule. The two intransitive verbs conjugated with sein that do not designate any modification are sein (“to be”) itself and bleiben (“to remain”).

Translate the following German sentences.

  • Sie ist letzten Monat gestorben.

    ________________

  • Ich war zu Hause geblieben.

    ________________

  • Er war nicht gekommen.

    ________________

  • Wir sind uns gestern auf der Straße begegnet.

    ________________

  • Wo bist du gestern Abend gewesen?

    ________________

  • Der Hund war seinem Herrn gefolgt.

    ________________

  • Wir sind spät eingeschlafen.

    ________________

  • Er ist auf die Post gegangen.

Exercise 22

The present of werden and the infinitive of the chief verb create the future tense of weak or strong verbs. The infinitive of haben or sein and the past participle of the main verb (with the present tense of werden) create the future perfect.

Match the following German sentences with their English equivalents.
