  4. The Class with -e: Class II

The Class with -e: Class II

The general rule for Class II nouns is to take the nominative singular of the noun and attach an -e. Except for neuter nouns, when you construct the plural you must add an umlaut to most nouns of Class II. However, you do not change the stem vowel to one with an umlaut in the plural for the German words Tag, Jahr, or Monat.

Class II includes masculine, neuter, and feminine nouns of more than one syllable ending in -ig, -ing, -ling, -sal, -kunft, and -nis. For this last group you are to double the s before the plural ending: -isse. And when the last component of compound nouns consists of a one-syllable noun, these are also Class II nouns.

Exercise 7

In the first four questions, decline the masculine singular word for son (der Sohn), in questions 5–8, the plural of son.
