Telling Time

In German, you state time in progression from one hour to the next and expect the succeeding hour when the time has advanced to the first quarter. For example, you say the equivalents of “it is a quarter past” and “it is half past,” but Germans can also say drei viertel elf for 10:45. You also state time on the principle of a twenty-four hour day, like military time.
