In Ich bin ein vorsichtiger Fahrer, the ending -er is attached to the base word “vorsichtig.” We call this adjective an attributive adjective, and we need to change the endings according to certain rules. The following adjectives are not declined:

• Adjectives following the verb sein as a predicate adjective

• Adjectives following werden (“to become, get”)

• Adjectives that are derived from names of cities by attaching -er

• An adjective used as an adverb

Exercise 2

Attributive adjectives precede the noun they modify. The endings of the attributive adjectives are determined by the gender, number, and case of the nouns they modify.
