There are two kinds of conjunctions. Coordinating conjunctions connect sentences, clauses, phrases, or words of equal rank. These coordinating conjuctions are “and,” “but,” and “or.” Subordinating conjunctions (such as “when,” “until,” “although”), on the other hand, join dependent clauses with main clauses.

In German, the most frequently used coordinating conjunctions are

• und (“and”)

• enn (“for”)

• oder (“or”)

• entweder … oder (“either or”)

• sondern (“but”)

• aber (“but”).

Keep in mind that the word order does not change after coordinating conjunctions. You must place the subject first and the verb second, following the normal word order in a sentence.

Exercise 25

Sondern is a more persuasive form of “but” that you are to translate as “but rather” or “on the contrary.” Make the first part of the sentence negative, with the subject of the clause starting with sondern going back to the very same subject as the negative clause.
