This German vocabulary deals with common ailments. These phrases can help you get the proper medical assistance when needed. The following vocabulary goes with haben (to have). For example, “to have arthritis” is Arthritis haben.

Another group of illnesses is expressed using the verb sein (to be). For example, “to be asthmatic” is Asth-matiker sein.

There is one term that is unique. If you wish to say you are an insomniac, use the phrase “Ich leide an Schlaflosigkeit.” (eech LYE deh ahn SHLAHF loze ik kite).

Unlike English, German doesn't use possessive adjectives with parts of the body, such as “my arm” or “her leg.” Instead, reflexive pronouns are used and the body part is preceded by a definite article (der, die, das): Er bricht sich den Finger. (He breaks his finger.)
