The Indefinite Article

Indefinite articles are used with nouns that are not specific, and are similar to the English “a,” “an,” and “some.” There are three forms of indefinite articles in French:

  • un: when used before a word with masculine gender

  • une: when used before a word with feminine gender

  • des: when used to indicate a group or more than one of an item

Indefinite articles are used when one is referring in general to an item. Un and une are equivalent to “a” in English. Des, the plural, can mean “some” or “any” in English, and is used with plural nouns of either gender.
