The Definite Article
In French, the definite article can take one of four forms:
le : when used before a word with masculine genderla : when used before a word with feminine genderl' : when used before a word that starts with a vowel or silent “h”les : when used to indicate a group or more than one of an item

The definite article is used when referring to specific items.
