Wild plants spring up wherever they are given space to grow naturally without sprays or mowing, some forming their own communities. Foraging requires knowing where these communities are and the time of year to visit them. It may be an abandoned lot, a hedgerow that has grown up at the edge of a field or forest, a meadow, swamp, desert, or your own backyard where weeds, fruits, and nuts often abound. The altitude, humidity, rainfall, temperature, and soil are some of the factors that determine which plants will grow in a particular area.
