Bacon and Water Chestnut Appetizer
Cooked bacon tastes delicious topped with white sugar. Ketchup and soy sauce can also be served for dipping.
INGREDIENTS | YIELDS 24 appetizers
- 24 whole water chestnuts, fresh or canned
- 4 cups oil for deep-frying, or as needed
- 12 slices bacon
- 1 cup white sugar
If using fresh water chestnuts, peel, rinse, and drain. If using canned water chestnuts, rinse with warm running water and drain thoroughly.
Cut the bacon slices in half. Wrap each piece of bacon around a water chestnut, and use a toothpick to secure. Place the water chestnuts on a serving tray.
Add the oil to the fondue pot, making sure it is not more than half full. Heat the pot on a stove element over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, move the fondue pot to the table and set up the burner.
Use dipping forks to spear the water chestnuts and cook briefly in the hot oil. Dip the cooked water chestnuts and bacon in the sugar.
