Trash Fish

Some fishermen consider certain kinds of fish undesirable and call them trash, or junk, fish. These are usually fish that are not normally eaten and this designation goes back to when all fish were considered food fish. Other fishermen realize that all fish have some good qualities and go after them. Some fish that are considered trash fish, like gar in fresh water, put up an excellent fight. In salt water, some of the so-called trash fish are actually okay to eat and fishermen target them when more desirable species are not available.

Carp are considered trash fish in most of the United States but are sought after as game fish in many other countries. They're plentiful, they fight hard, and they can be eaten, although they have a lot of small bones. Consider targeting carp and have a lot of fun.

If you enjoy catching a fish or think it tastes good, don't worry too much about what others think. Go out and catch it, have fun, and eat a good meal. If someone asks about catching trash fish, just smile and tell that person you agree and he or she shouldn't try to catch them. Keep them to yourself.
