What to Ask When You Get There
When you get to your destination outside of the United States, find out where the U.S. embassy or consulate is located and how to get there, as they can help you find necessary medical care. Also get directions to the nearest hospital or clinic. Consult with your guidebook, hotel, or tourist office for recommendations on local doctors.
In remote areas, you may have to rely on a police station, military base, or missionary post to give you help and information. Ask how and where you can make international calls and access the Internet at your vacation destination. Check out the area and locations of the closest grocery store where you can buy bottled water and other safe, packaged food and beverages. Remember to never eat food from street vendors.
In foreign countries where there are concerns about clean water, it's important to remember to wash wounds only with bottled water.
