Stimulants
While the use of stimulants for fibromyalgia is avoided whenever possible, they may be used in dire situations, for instance, when school or job performance is deteriorating severely. One stimulant, modafinil (Provigil), has significantly fewer side effects than most others, though its effect may wear off after a few months. Some antidepressants like venlafaxine (Effexor) and desipramine (Norpramin) have stimulating properties, as does the antiseizure drug topiramate (Topamax). Stronger stimulants like methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta), and amphetamines (Dexedrine, Adderal) should probably only be used under the supervision of a psychiatrist.
